Carduelis carduelis (European Goldfinch)
The European goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) is easy to recognise: a red face, a black-and-white head and a broad yellow band across the black wings. It is a sociable seed eater with a fine, pointed bill, fond of thistles and teasels, and often arrives in small flocks.
